Chapter 8: The Art of Respect

The golden light of late afternoon streamed through the high windows of the community center, illuminating the near-finished woodwork of the main prayer hall. With major construction wrapping up, the atmosphere had shifted from chaotic noise to quiet refinement.

Sumayya sat in her office reviewing final invoices, her mind drifting to how seamlessly Farhan had led the project. Over the past few weeks, his conduct had remained unwavering. He never sought private conversations, never sent unnecessary messages outside of official email hours, and always ensured a third person was present during site reviews. Yet, his respect was felt in every decision he made.

When the board initially suggested cutting costs by reducing the footprint of the women’s section, Farhan had firmly advocated for equal quality and space. He hadn't boasted about it; Sumayya had only found out through Uncle Tariq. Farhan’s character was built on silent actions, not grand declarations.

A gentle knock at her open door frame brought her out of her thoughts. Farhan stood in the doorway, holding a folder, keeping a generous step back in the hallway.

"Assalamu Alaikum, Sister Sumayya," he said, lowering his eyes politely. "I have the final inspection reports and safety sign-offs for your records."

"Wa Alaikum Assalam, Brother Farhan," Sumayya replied, standing up and placing the folder on the front edge of her desk. "Thank you. I’ll make sure the board receives these tonight."

Farhan didn't leave immediately, though he maintained his reserved stance. "I wanted to inform you that my on-site role concludes this Friday. The remaining touch-ups will be handled by the local painting crew."

Sumayya felt a sudden, sharp stillness in her chest, though she kept her composure. "I see. You’ve done remarkable work here, Brother Farhan. The entire community is grateful."

"Alhamdulillah," Farhan said softly. He paused, his hands resting behind his back. The air between them carried a quiet weight, filled with everything left unsaid. Farhan took a slow breath, choosing his words with deliberate care.

"Sister Sumayya," he began, his voice steady yet filled with gentle solemnity. "It has been an honor working alongside someone who carries such sincere dedication. I have immense respect for your character and your family."

Sumayya looked down at the desk, her heart beating in a soft, steady rhythm. "Jazakallah Khair, Brother Farhan. The respect is mutual."

Farhan offered a short, solemn nod. He didn't push further, nor did he cross the boundary of propriety. He had made his respect clear, guarding both her dignity and his own until the proper channels could be opened.

"May Allah continue to bless your efforts," he said quietly, before turning to walk down the sunlit corridor.

Sumayya sat back down, placing a hand over her heart, feeling a deep, comforting conviction that this was not the end of their story—only the honorable closing of its first chapter.
