The Sunday morning sun filled the cozy living room of Farhan’s family home, bringing with it the lively chatter of his younger sister, Layla. Layla was a energetic university student whose sharp observational skills rarely missed a detail, especially when it came to her older brother.
Farhan sat at the dining table, a cup of coffee growing cold beside him as he flipped through a stack of community center progress reports. He was trying to focus on the supply estimates, but his mind kept drifting back to the conversation he had shared with Sumayya about the new courtyard garden.
Layla leaned against the doorframe, watching him with an amused smirk. "You’ve read that same page three times, Farhan."
Farhan glanced up, adjusting his posture. "I'm just reviewing the budget for the expansion."
"Right. The expansion," Layla said, walking over and sliding into the chair across from him. "The same project that has you leaving the house an hour early every morning and humming under your breath while you draw garden layouts? You’ve changed, brother."
Farhan shook his head, trying to maintain his usual composed expression. "It’s an important project for the community. It requires attention to detail."
"It’s not just the project," Layla teased, leaning in slightly with a mischievous spark in her eye. "I ran into Aalia after youth group yesterday. She mentioned that the operations manager for the center—Sumayya—has been doing an incredible job keeping everything running smoothly. And she might have mentioned how professional and polite the lead architect is around her."
Farhan felt a sudden rise of warmth in his cheeks, though he carefully set his pen down without making a sound. "Sister Sumayya is very dedicated to her work. Everyone on the committee respects her."
"Sister Sumayya, hmmm?" Layla smiled, her teasing tone softening into genuine warmth. "You know, Farhan, I haven't seen you this grounded and intentional about anything in a long time. You don't just talk about her work—your whole demeanor changes when the project comes up."
Farhan fell silent for a moment, looking down at his hands. He knew he couldn't fool his sister for long, nor did he want to mask an intention that was growing more sincere by the day.
"She is different, Layla," Farhan said quietly, his voice low and honest. "She has a quiet strength, and everything she does is centered around her values. It’s hard not to respect that."
Layla’s smile widened, this time with pure affection. "So... are you going to sit here reviewing blueprints forever, or are you going to talk to Baba and Ammi soon?"
Farhan looked at his sister, a steady, resolved calm taking over his features. "When the time is right. I want to make sure my intentions are completely clear and that I do this with full respect for her and her family."
Layla placed a reassuring hand on his arm. "May Allah make it easy for you, Farhan. She sounds like an answer to prayer."
