Chapter 5: Whispers in Sujood

The house was bathed in late-night silence, save for the soft ticking of the clock in the hallway. Sumayya folded her arms over her chest, standing on her prayer rug in the quiet sanctuary of her bedroom. The world outside was asleep, but her mind was alive with a gentle, unfamiliar restlessness.

Earlier that evening, while sorting through the week's event logs, she had noticed a hand-drawn diagram tucked inside the site folder. It was a detail for the new courtyard garden—a small addition not included in the official contract. At the bottom, in Farhan’s neat script, was a short note: A quiet space for the sisters and elders to rest between prayers.

It was a small thing, yet it spoke volumes about his character. He moved through the world with a quiet, deliberate mindfulness that avoided showiness or pretense.

Sumayya knelt into sujood, resting her forehead against the cool fabric of the mat. She stayed there longer than usual, letting the silence wrap around her.

"O Allah," she whispered softly into the quiet room, her voice trembling slightly with emotion. "You know what is hidden in my heart before I even speak it. If this feeling, if this person, is good for my Deen, my life, and my outcome, then soften my heart toward it and make it easy for me. And if it is not, turn my heart away and grant me contentment with Your decree."

It was her third night praying Istikhara. She wasn't seeking grand signs, visions, or sudden revelations—she knew that true clarity often arrived as a quiet, settled peace within the soul.

When she finally completed her prayers and sat back, her hands lifted in open supplication, a deep sense of tranquility settled over her. The knot of hesitation that usually accompanied thoughts of the future began to loosen.

Across town, in a small apartment illuminated only by a desk lamp, Farhan sat surrounded by rolled blueprints and architectural references. He held his fountain pen over a blank page in his leather notebook, unable to focus on the structural calculations before him.

He thought back to the way Sumayya handled every detail at the center—with grace, sharp intellect, and an unwavering devotion to keeping everything centered around Allah. She wasn't just efficient; she was grounded in a way that made him want to be a better man, a better leader, and a stronger believer.

Farhan closed the notebook, set his pen down, and stood up to perform wudu. As the cool water washed away the fatigue of the day, his intention crystallized. He would not rush, nor would he act impulsively. He would guard her honor and his own by doing things the right way, when the time was right.

Standing on his prayer mat, Farhan lowered himself into prostration, placing his hopes entirely in the hands of the One who turns hearts.

"Ya Muqallib al-Qulub," he prayed quietly in the darkness. "Guide my steps, keep my intentions pure, and if she is written for me, let our path be blessed."
